Welcome to Dodge City, Kansas.
Dodge City is a city and county seat of Ford County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,176. It is the birthplace of actor and film-maker Dennis Hopper. It is also where Wyatt Earp served as an officer of the law at the end of the 1870's.
Located in the Southwest Region of the state, in Ford County, (county seat). Pop. 21,129, Elev. 2594. Dodge City lies southwest of Great Bend along U.S. Hwy-50, on the banks of the Arkansas River. The city also is near Hain State Lake and Park. Dodge City was once called Hell of the Plains and the Wickedest Little City in America. In 1864, Fort Dodge - 1865 to 1882 was established 5 miles east and named after Colonel Henry I. Dodge. Dodge City was settled in 1872 and grew as a frontier town on the old Santa Fe Trail. It was a magnet of colorful characters, a freight line center and cattle business headquarters. Today Dodge City is a growing city and a sorgum, wheat and livestock marketing center. Manufactured items include metal products and machinery, farm implements, processed foods, canvas goods and furniture.
Also a tourist destination, Dodge City features a replica of Front Street with the Long Branch Saloon, and Boot Hill Cemetery and Boot Hill Museum and Front Street.
Situated on a site once used as a camping ground by wagon trains, Fort Dodge was a supply depot and base of operations against warring Plains Indians. The fort was established in 1865. The first buildings were sod and adobe, and some troops lived in dugouts. Disease was common during the first year in the isolated fort.
The 7th U.S. Cavalry was at Fort Dodge when George Armstrong Custer returned to his regiment after a court martial suspension. The fort was abandoned in 1882. Eight years later Fort Dodge was deeded to the state for use as a soldiers home, and it still serves today as the Kansas Soldiers Home.
Boot Hill Museum and Front Street was founded in 1947 to collect, preserve and interpret the history of Dodge City. It's exhibits, reconstructed business buildings and other interpertive programs provide a glimpse into the town's early history when it was a buffalo hunters' trade center and, later, a cattle town. The museum actively collects objects, photographs and documents relating to Dodge City's past. It preserves and exhibits them in settings which recreate the Dodge City of the 1870's. The site includes the historic cemetery, the Fort Dodge jail and a replica of Front Street as it appeared in the 1800's.
